LA, CA—The Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Education announced Friday it would investigate whether Donald Trump University violated state and federal laws by allowing students to sign up for courses they had no intention of attending.
Los Angeles has seen a steady stream of lawsuits alleging fraudulent or fraudulent-sounding courses from Trump University, the controversial real estate seminar series, which offers no education and promises millions in profits, but which has been accused of scamming students out of thousands of dollars.
Los Angles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a statement calling on Trump to take steps to prevent the continued use of his business.
“There are tens of thousands or millions of people who are taking this business to scam people, who are just as clueless as the people who were duped into thinking this was going to be their ticket to a better life,” Garcetti said.
“This is a company that’s been accused by the Department of Education of violating federal laws, but it’s been allowed to continue for more than five years because of the president.”
The statement continued, “This was a company which, as of now, is still being used by millions of Americans who have never heard of Donald Trump.”
The LAUSD will continue to investigate the validity of Trump University’s claims, and will take action against any violators, Garcetti added.
