Walmart’s lax labor practices have caused the company to miss out on millions of dollars in contracts, a new study finds.
The company, which has a history of labor abuses in the U.S., has been sued by a labor union and sued for $3.5 billion by the federal government.
The company has long used temporary workers to fill jobs and is accused of violating federal labor laws, but it’s not clear whether that has affected its labor practices, the study said.
Walmart employs about 3.3 million people in the United States, including more than 400,000 in stores and restaurants.
It employs about 2 million people worldwide.
Walmart has not responded to requests for comment.
Walmart’s labor practices and its alleged labor violations led to lawsuits against the company in 2010 and 2011, and the company settled the case in 2017.
The federal government said it would conduct a review of Walmart’s practices after the study was released.
Walmart declined to release the report.
“We’ve been very clear that Walmart is a workplace where we’re going to try to make sure that people are treated fairly and fairly treated fairly,” said Chris Pincus, senior vice president at the American Federation of Government Employees union, which represents about 3 million government workers.
Walmart was sued for violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and a federal labor law called the National Labor Relations Act in the early 1990s.
The union and the Justice Department brought lawsuits against Walmart in 1999, 2000 and 2006.
The lawsuit was dismissed in 2015.
Pincus said he was disappointed by the findings, but said the companies response has been consistent.
“It’s not like Walmart’s doing things a lot differently than other companies, because they’re still going to be doing those things,” Pincuses said.
A Walmart spokesman said the company is investigating the study.
The findings have been reviewed and will be reviewed by Walmart’s human resources department, said a Walmart spokesman.
Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report’s findings.
Walmart has a reputation for making bad decisions, but Pincsus said Walmart’s poor labor practices could also be an indicator that the company does not do enough to protect workers.
